In the movie "Contact", actress Jodi Foster played the character Dr. Ellie Arroway from Carl Sagan's book "Contact". This character is generally acknowledged to be based on the real-life searcher for life on other worlds, Dr. Jill Tarter, Director of the Center for SETI Research (SETI is the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence).
