Pictures of Elgin Elementary School

These pictures are of the Elgin Elementary School, which is about a half mile due south of the Winer Observatory. The Observatory's Director, Mark Trueblood, has volunteered his time to give talks and demonstrations at the school beginning in 1995 as part of the Project ASTRO program, administered locally by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson. The figure "8" painted on the sidewalk in front of the school is part of a sundial painted by the fourth grade students of Lori Barille in 1997. A person standing on the analemma (figure 8) acts as the gnomon, or part of the sundial that casts the shadow from the Sun that tells time. The size and orientation of the layout was computed by Dave Harvey of Comsoft and donated to the school.
